Some air conditioning systems, most notably on high-end vehicles, will actually sense this condition and stop the compressor from working when there is not enough refrigerant in the system. While this type of system will save you the cost of a burnt-out compressor, if you don’t have your A/C system checked on a regular basis, you’re not going to find this out until some hot day when you need cool air the most.

One simple thing you can do, in addition to visiting one of your local trusted tire stores, is to help minimize automotive A/C problems by running the unit periodically, even in winter. The rule of thumb is 10 minutes every month. This will distribute lubricant to the seals keeping them from becoming brittle and leaking, as well as coating interior metal parts to keep them from corroding.

Low refrigerant charge

Clogged evaporator

ALLEN PARK, Mich., June 1, 2010 – The Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) is the national trade association for tire manufacturers and is hosting the 9th annual . Last year more than 20,000 tire and auto service outlets participated in the RMA tire safety week. This year the event will take place June 6-12, 2010.

The tire industry urges consumers to maintain tires to save fuel, promote safety. "Belle Tire and it's ASE Certified technicians are always happy to help customers learn about proper tire and car care." said Don Barnes, marketing manager at Belle Tire "Educating customers and filling their needs is extremely important to us, we also like to make them aware of importance of keeping their tires filled too.

Underinflated tires risk safety, waste fuel and cause tire wear quicker than adequately inflated tires. The RMA has released a survey showing more half of 5,400 plus vehicles reported at least one under inflated tire. Nearly 20 percent of vehicles had at least one tire under inflated by 8 pounds per square inch (psi).

In addition to this annual event the RMA’s “Be Tire Smart – Play Your PART” program is a year-round effort designed to help drivers learn the simple steps they can take to ensure that their tires are in good working condition. Bald is Not Beautiful When it Comes to Your Tires Tread

No matter where you live, or what time of the year it happens to be, there is always the potential for inclement weather. Any time it rains or snows and you get behind the wheel of your car, you can be faced with driving risks. Depending on road conditions and your driving speed, stopping on wet roads can take up to four times the normal distance. And if your tires are worn ... they can hydroplane, or skim over the surface of the road with little or no traction.

Unfortunately, there are more people than you may realize who are sharing the road while driving on worn tires. Recently, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducted a study of 11,500 cars, pickup trucks, vans, and sport-utility vehicles and found that nearly 50% had at least one tire with half-worn tread wear. Another 10% had at least one bald tire.

Worn tires ... especially bald ones ... can be deadly on wet roads, where the grooves aren't deep enough to channel water out from beneath the tread. The result is hydroplaning, where the tread wear allow the tire to skim the water's surface and the vehicle no longer responds to the steering wheel. Wet weather braking and snow traction also decrease with tread wear on balder tires.

Industry advocates like the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) remind drivers to check their vehicle's tires as part of regular seasonal maintenance. According to RMA research, two out of three drivers don't know how to tell if their tires are bald.

The accepted standard for tires to be considered bald is when one or more of their grooves reach 2/32 of an inch deep, compared with about 10/32 of an inch for new tires. FYI – tire tread wear is usually measured in 1/32-inch increments. To make bald tires easier for owners to spot, manufacturers have placed a series of molded horizontal bars at the base of the grooves. As the tire treads wears away the bars become flush with surrounding tread when the groove's depth reaches 2/32 of an inch.

Traditional tread condition has been easily checked with a Lincoln penny. Placing the penny upside down within the tread, if you saw the top of Lincoln’s head, the tire needed to be replaced. However, testing shows that you should consider changing tires sooner. There is quite a dramatic difference between the stopping distance of a tire with 2/32- inch of tread compared to 4/32. Using a quarter will help you quickly find out if you have 4/32- inch of tread left. If you can see the top of Lincoln's wig, then it is time to get new tires.

Since tire tread provides the gripping action and traction to prevent a vehicle from slipping and sliding, a tire is not safe and should be replaced when the tread is worn down to 1/16th of an inch. Not only is it extremely important for your driving safety to ensure that your tires have ample tread, but it's also very important to make sure your tires are properly inflated. It can't be stressed enough ... if you drive on tires that are bald or substantially under-inflated you risk injury, or worse, to you, your passengers, and other drivers on the road.

It's important to understand the risks you face as a driver when driving in challenging weather conditions and the affect worn tires can have.

Winter Grip Slips On Worn Tires
Deep grooves and an array of small slits, known as "sipes," help new tires bite into snow. Shallower tread and worn-away sipes reduce snow grip, affecting traction on acceleration and overall braking performance.

Summer Rain and Hydroplaning Starts Sooner As Your Tread Wears Away
Common sense should tell you that the faster you drive on wet pavement, the greater the risk of hydroplaning. Simply put, higher speeds allow less time for water to escape through the tread grooves. Shallower tread worsens that situation by allowing more water to stay beneath the tire.

Less Tread = Longer Wet-Weather Stops
Reduced wet-weather braking can be even more dangerous than hydroplaning. Compared with new tires, well-worn tires take much longer to stop, even on vehicles equipped with antilock braking systems.

To better protect motorists, the NHTSA has launched a tire safety campaign called: "Tire Safety: Everything Rides on It." Through ads, brochures and radio ads, the campaign advises car owners to check their tires monthly, as well as prior to a long trip, to be sure they have safe tread wear, and will stress the importance of proper tire inflation and vehicle load limits.

It’s easy to notice if your tires have uneven or excessive tread wear, spot a tell-tale coolant leak under your car or hear that grinding sound that tells you your brake pads need replacement. Shocks and struts are different.

Like other important vehicle systems, they do wear out over time, but often so gradually you don’t even notice. They’re also more difficult to inspect. But, because they’re an important part of your car’s suspension system, your shocks and struts should be inspected for wear and tear at least twice a year. And, you can depend on your local Michigan or Ohio tire store to have ASE Certified Technicians with the training, tools and quality replacement shocks and struts from Tenneco to do the job right.

Suspension Basics
Most suspension systems have three primary components: coil springs, anti-sway bars and shocks or struts. Coil springs support most of the weight of the vehicle, maintain proper ride height and also help resist pitch and dip when you accelerate or stop. Anti-roll bars, sometimes called anti-sway bars, connect the left and right suspension systems to the frame and help resist sway or body roll during cornering.

A shock absorber, also called a damper, is an oil or gas filled tube that helps the coil springs and anti-roll-bars work more effectively by preventing unwanted motion in the suspension system. It converts kinetic energy created by the up and down motion of the tires into heat energy by forcing fluid or gas through a series of control valves inside itself. When is it Time for New Shocks and Struts?
Most vehicle owner manuals recommend frequent shock and strut inspection and replacement every 50,000 miles, depending on your personal driving habits. However, any of the following warning signs can tell you if your shocks and struts might need replacement.

Pitching or dipping – Coil springs can’t do it all. If you experience excessive pitching or dipping whenever you accelerate or stop, your shocks or struts may need replacement.
Body roll – Anti-roll or sway bars also can’t do it all. If you experience excessive body roll as you go around corners, it’s time to check your shocks or struts.
Tire bounce or hop – If your tires bounce, hop or lose contact with the road after you hit a bump, it’s a sign your shocks or struts may need replacement.
Fluid leaks – As shocks or struts wear, the seals that contain the fluid or gas inside them can begin to leak. Streaks of fluid that look like tears on the outside of the shock or strut tube are a sure sign of a fluid leak.
Excessive tire wear – Cupping is a type of excessive tire wear associated with worn out shocks or struts. If you see a diagonal wear pattern across the tread of a tire, worn-out shocks or struts may be the problem.

Belle Tire Passes AGRSS Validation

Belle Tire Auto Glass hosted a third party Automotive Glass Replacement Safety Standard (AGRSS) validation on Monday, January 18, 2010 and was found to be 100% compliant with the standard. This crowning achievement comes as the automotive glass division recently celebrated its second anniversary.
In announcing the validation result, John Cox, of Belle Tire Auto Glass stated, “Proving compliance with the safety standard through a third party validation firm is the highest substantiation of quality available to our industry. Tire Speed Ratings Are Easier to Understand Than You Think

What are tire speed ratings and why are they so important? Many tire buyers have asked this question and understanding the answer can help you the next time you buy a set of replacement tires for your car or truck.

The importance of tire speed ratings can be summed up quite simply. Tires are manufactured to a wide variety of specifications that meet, or exceed, certain levels of performance. The standard tires that will perform best on a Ford Focus, will not get the job done on a Chevrolet Corvette. Conversely, a Corvette tire will far exceed the needs of a Focus.

If you look closely enough you will notice there is a fair amount of information imprinted onto the side of your tire. Among this information is the speed rating, which is generally listed by a letter that follows the tire size and load index. For example, your tire may include this set of numbers and letters: P205/55R-15 88V. The P means passenger tire, 205/55 is the width and aspect ratio of the tire and the R designates this as a radial tire. The number 15 indicates that this tire fits 15 inch diameter wheels, 88 is the load index and V is the speed index. All tire manufacturers in the world adhere to a universal system of rating.

The whole idea of a speed rating may seem unnecessary in the United States, where our "legal" speed limits max out at 70mph, but in truth speed ratings were born overseas in Europe to meet the needs of the infamous German autobahn. Here posted speeds are not listed as maximum limits, but minimum requirements for the lane you choose to occupy. As vehicles became capable of higher and higher speeds, tire manufacturers realized that different tire grades were necessary to avoid catastrophic high-speed blowouts.

Speed ratings are determined through lab testing. Essentially, it involves pressing a tire at its appropriate load against a large, high-speed metal drum, and then gradually increasing running speed until the required speed rating has been reached. The chart below lists the tire speed ratings and the maximum speed for that rating:

M: 81mph (130 km/h)
N: 87 mph (140 km/h)
P: 93 mph (150 km/h)
Q: 99 mph (160 km/h)
R: 106 mph (170 km/h)
S: 112 mph (180 km/h)
T: 118 mph (190 km/h)
U: 124 mph (200 km/h)
H: 130 mph (210 km/h)
V: 149 mph (240 km/h)
W: 168 mph (270 km/h)
Y: 186 mph (300 km/h)
(Y): 186+ mph (300 km/h)

As you can probably guess, the speed ratings were originally created in kilometers-per-hour, thus the odd miles-per-hour increments. Also, there are two Y ratings; the Y rating enclosed in parentheses (Y) indicates that it has been tested in excess of 186 mph.

When you shop for replacement tires make sure you select a speed rated tire that meets your driving requirements. Naturally, you must be careful when driving not to exceed the rated speed of your tires. And also keep in mind that even though tire manufacturers market and sell tires capable of high speeds, they do not condone the use of their products in excess of legal speed limits. Don't try explaining to the officer that pulls you over for speeding that you thought you were allowed to go faster because your tires were capable of such excessive speeds.

Speed ratings are only effective when tires have not been damaged, altered in some fashion, are not overloaded and are properly inflated. Even if a tire has been repaired due to a puncture or other damage, it no longer retains the original speed rating because the manufacturer cannot control the quality of the repair.

Finally, although speed ratings do not indicate tire handling capabilities, a higher speed rating may translate to different handling characteristics. This is important to note if you buy a new set of tires with a lower speed rating. Make sure you are familiar with the handling characteristics of your car or truck and make the necessary driving adjustments to allow for the lower speed rating.

In the first two years the Wheels of HOPE program gave away seven cars along with gas cards, gift cards and one year vehicle insurance, all totaling over $50,000, to families in Michigan and Florida. Wheels of HOPE obtains the used vehicles through donations by Collex Collision, charitable organizations, including Charity Motors and Volunteers of America, and individual donors. Comments: I had my first flat in years. One lug nut was frozen on. I needed to call Allstate MC to tow the car last night to 2740 Rochester Rd. In addition to fixing the flat, I also asked that you check the pressure on my spare, replace any lug nuts that I rounded-off, while trying to remove them and estimate remaining tread life on the tires. You can imagine my surprise when I learned that you did all the work at no charge, plus that I still had about 30K miles left on the tires. When I offered to pay for the three new lug-nuts, your salesman told me that three lug nuts were no big deal. You earned a loyal customer today.

We recently received some excellent feedback about Bruce at the Macomb Township store. Make sure you pay him a visit!

"Yesterday afternoon (Saturday, August 8th) my mom and I had just finished grocery shopping and made our way to her vehicle. We noticed that one of her tires was looking a little flat and needed air.

We then headed to a nearby gas station where we encountered Bruce, a member of the Belle Tire team in Macomb Township (on Hall Road/M-59) and in Shelby Township (on Van Dyke). He happened to be pumping gas and noticed the two of us struggling to fill the tire and came over to offer help.

Bruce filled the tire and even checked the pressure and explained to us how much air the tire actually needed. I am writing to you today because it's very rare that you find people so kind and willing to help.

Long Weekend, Why Hello!
Memorial Day 2009 should be one to remember!

Memorial Day is the day our nation commemorates United States men and women who died defending our country in the military service. Here in Detroit, there is so much going on. Whether you're honoring a loved one, spending time with family and friends, or just sitting at home watching the Red Wings on Sunday, we all appreciate that extra Monday off! OH! and get this! Mother Nature decided to give us a break! It's only supposed to rain on Saturday! If you know anything about Michigan's normal cloud-covered weather, you'd understand that that's quite a feat!

Here's a quick recap of this weekends highlights...

The Detroit Tigers play Colorado Rockies Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It's sure to be a great weekend at Comerica Park. As I said, the game might get rained out on Saturday but today and Sunday it's supposed to be sunny and mid 70's. GO TIGERS!

The Detroit Red Wings continue their battle against The Blackhawks Friday and Sunday. Tonight's game starts at 8:00 pm and Sunday's is at 3:00 pm (both away). C'mon guys! Only 2 more! GO WINGS!

The 93rd Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 24th, 2009 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana. Now I'm not going to lie, I'm not much for cars driving in circles, but I know a lot of you out there are! This year is marks the beginning of the Centennial Era Celebration. Televised on ABC, I'm sure this year will be quite a celebration!

With all of this going on, Memorial Day Weekend 2009 will definitely be one to remember!

Go Wings! Detroit Red Wings Move on After Their Victory in Game 7

Last night, our very own Detroit Red Wings pulled of a victory against the Ducks in game 7. (As if any of us had any doubt!) Ok, ok, we were a little nervous... but relief came when they scored that 4th goal with only 3 minutes left in the 3rd.

On Sunday, the Wings will continue their journey towards retaining the Stanley Cup and play the Chicago Blackhawks for the Western Conference finals. (Game time; 3:00 pm, @home.)

Any predictions for the game? (Besides winning!)

Our Twitter Ticket Giveaway went really well!

On Thursday we had 15 winners. 10 Tweeps (@Milandering, @Sarshie, @baiosa, @FionaBean2, @JimtheNinja, @dt_money, @PlusModelNikki, @DJ Joey Corona, @m_kellogg & @sunnyfaye) received tickets to the basketball game on Sunday at the Palace. 5 Tweeps (@DJ Joey Corona, @becksdavis, @lesley48220, @Katie_Thompson_, @ EstrellaBella10) won Suite Tickets to the baseballe game on Monday (tonight) in Detroit.

Unfortunately, a mistake was made with the UPS Delivery. The basketball tickets had to be put on WillCall for the winners at the Palace and the baseball tickets will not arrive until today. But! You live and you learn! This was the first time doing anything like this on Twitter and mistakes were bound to be made.

Some of us here at Belle Tire were lucky enough to attend the Tigers Home Opener on Friday! Personally, this was the first time I had the opportunity to go, and I will admit, I had a blast!

The Tigers beat the Rangers 15-2! Holy Cow! It was a beautiful day and it was great to see so many people enjoying downtown Detroit.
